March 19: a Moray "Faces of Africa" with Father Daniel Moschetti

I accepted the invitation with absolute delight of my friends Circolo ACLI "Don Tonino Bello" of Moray, to help publicize the event organized under the patronage of the parish, for Saturday, March 19.

The event is great for the whole community morazzonese: for Catholics who see in the missionary world, life and the choices of Father Daniele Moschetti, the furthest point of the Gospel witness, but it is for the lay community that lives and believes in those values of solidarity, justice, acceptance and peace.

It is for me, for the evolution over time has been my political and social commitment, "grown" thanks to so many meetings like this, which began here in Moray at the turn of the 70s and 80s. And there is a wonderful thread that binds them together.

Before Father Daniel, the early-80s if memory serves me correctly, with a group of young people who inspire the activities of the municipal library (among them Mary Clement, Mark, Claudia, Anna,) Moray hosted a conference of a still young but no less combative than now, Alex Zanotelli, then director of Nigrizia and strongly engaged in the fight against the arms trade, enough to cause a severe reaction from the governments of the time and in particular the Ministers of Defence Spadolini. While Alex was leaving for Gorokocho, Kenya in Moray known and frequented by working with him side by side, just Daniele Moschetti, in 1988 will leave the job to begin his path postulant and then a theology student at Comboni, in Kenya. Already here in the '90s, still a young student, Daniel was often alongside his father in the slums of Alex Gorokocho where then replace it for almost a decade . He moved to Jerusalem, where will spend a sabbatical period of training and reflection, Daniel land in South Sudan where the beginning is also del'anno provincial superior of the Comboni missionaries who work there.

For years, his father Daniel, although far there has been close by his example, his prayers his long letters, passionate and full of details, anecdotes, observations, names of places and people, full of reflections, deep perspective ... I always thought that he wrote with a scalpel, but looking at the cross.

These letters are now collected in two books (The Gospel of the landfill and Jerusalem the navel of the world) to read absolutely. Today, more lightly and more frequently we can reflect with him, thanks to notes that publishes on his Facebook page: "the night owl in his thoughts."

Saturday evening March 19, Father Daniel is at Moray and I want to welcome him by publishing an excerpt from one of those intense and long letters which gives life to his relationship for years with thousands and thousands of friends in all distributed continents.
And the letter he wrote from Korogocho, Nairobi (Kenya) Aug. 14, 2002: One of the first addressed to me and even more so among those who are dear to me.

sandals Alex *

".... Alex, if I remember correctly the day before leaving, took me aside in the cabin and told me "Daniel take off your shoes I will serve in Italy. I give you here in my Korogocho are more resistant. "It was real ... his are very resistant to the streets of Korogocho but this gesture I wanted to read his desire to stay close to me and to the poor , albeit with a trivial subject but biblically great! And so Alex will continue his mission in the North with my sandals and I'll do here with his sandals, the symbol of a mission that continues.

legacy is heavy and sometimes close: That's why I heard and felt by my feet, that the early days struggled to get used to these strange sandals. Now I'm used to hearing them and put them on mine, hope is also a mission of hope and vision scope with dignity as he lived his friend and brother Alex in a continent more and more crucified and forgotten!
I confess that it is not easy. Sometimes you feel the fatigue of being alone, but only a few moments, and then to realize how much you're giving him an extraordinary experience for you to grow. Now I'm also enjoying the friendships and the paths made with Thiene Padova and young people. So, with hindsight we can see better Life. Each step requires effort and stones fan part of the way!

Slowly I am learning to "be a priest," that is, to hear more about the life of God in everyday life that pulsates and emergencies. I understand when Alex says he learned to become a priest here in Korogocho. The intense united humanity to the many problems of the poor humanizes you. Sometimes you are overcome by their intensity, and maybe you get angry. But it is only a moment for your choice is here and for them, these people crucified! The baptism of the poor, that I received when I professed vows here in the chapel of St. John, and I still carry in my heart, I gave the charge to give back what I received as a gift from the Lord really great. And when you meet the kids on the street, so many, so beautiful and a wonderful smile to greet you and want to be healthy shake hands or with a "how are you?" Or "wa wariu?" How do you recharge their desire for joy and enthusiasm!

Thanks friend and brother Alex! Your legacy is heavy and light at the same time! I tried to learn a lot, to put aside as they say ... and now it's my turn! Was the slogan for the Jubilee of the Oppressed, in that building Verona's so packed, we said all along! Help me and help me with your prayers and solidarity!
and I feel that 'important to be here, for the many people who have asked me and especially for a church that is able to show their face soft and blessing of a God who is Father and Mother. It is indeed a great challenge for me !..... "

* Alex, of course, is Alex Zanotelli .
